(and why they let us climb them)

the arms stretch upward, pointing to God

the chatter is quiet, the sap is not loud

a family of pliable, a family of firm

the tree is for earth the most wonderful germ

friendly to men, sacrificial of service

climb them all day, hug their trunk when you’re nervous

Trees are just soldiers with laughter in their hearts.

squirrels, bears and callbirds to chirp in their parts.

Even the monkey knows his way through their frames.

But trees serve near best the sweet beasts wh’gave them names.

Only one thing on top does a tree bow beneath.

Just their Maker in Heaven, who their tender majesty bequeathed.

If you paint for me even one thing which is true, perhaps I’ll be tempted to consider two. I tell tales poetically, someone else needs to set them to music.
